Me and My Kindle

Submitted by justevolvin on Sun, 03/16/2008 - 20:11

I have had my Kindle for over a month now and am very pleased with my purchase. The device suits its purpose perfectly. I find myself reading more now than I ever have. Last night I downloaded my 5th book, Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides. The most interesting part is how I came about purchasing this book.

I was laying in my bed last night and it was about 11:00p. I had purchased Free Culture by Lawrence Lessig ($9.99 US) earlier in the day and was beginning Chapter 2 when I realized that I didn't really feel like reading non-fiction. While still sitting in my bed, I pressed the home button, navigated to the Kindle Store and requested two samples: Middlesex and The Road, both on the bestseller's list.

I quickly tired of The Road as it wasn't my style of book. So I went back to the home page and pulled up Middlesex. After reading the first chapter, I couldn't stop reading. Once I reached the end of the sample (about 1.25 chapters), I selected the link to purchase the book ($9.99 US). I got up, went to the bathroom, came back to bed and snuggled up with the entire book (it downloaded during my brief trip from one room to another and back) and read another chapter before falling asleep.

This device is so much more than I ever thought it could be. It truly is the the next generation in the evolution of the book as we know it. Forget all the experimental crap that's on there, I'm happy reading books and only books. If you're looking for a device to handle your online media and content on-the-go, then the Kindle is not for you.

Coming soon: I've separated my critiques into the good and the bad. I also reserved my criticisms for the purpose the Kindle was intended to fulfill: book reading. I'll explore the experimental features (internet, mechanical turk, etc.) last. While I'd love to say there is nothing wrong with the device, its only fair to point out what will hopefully be improved in future models. Keep in mind that the good stuff is really good - so much so that I would definitely purchase one again and certainly recommend it to those with the extra funds to splurge on such a convenience.
